Not a Rotisserie Game

Benchwarmer Baseball is something different than typical fantasy baseball games.  Do you play Fantasy Football?  This is more similar to that, where you play head-to-head games each week on a march toward the playoffs.  We don't just tally up stats - we put together a box score for each game.

Why We're Different

Let's not take anything away from Rotisserie Baseball.  It's a classic.  It's easy to understand.  I play in Roto Leagues myself.  But wouldn't you like something beyond that?  In Roto Baseball, you draft a team of players and try to amass the most stats in certain categories.  Some systems allow you to play head-to-head with other owners, but it's still the same format - did your team hit more home runs than the other team that week?  More saves?  More wins?

Like Real Baseball

Which of these sounds like more fun...

  • "I had no chance in scoring any more points in saves, so I traded Kenley Jansen for Trea Turner.  With the extra steals from Turner, I was able to win that category and win the league."

OR

  • "My team was having trouble scoring runs, so I made the decision to trade away my top closer, Kenley Jansen, to get Trea Turner.  With Turner at the top of my batting order, I had more speed and more runs and with the extra cash I had after trading Jansen, I could afford to sign Hector Neris to be a second closer.  I was able to overcome a 5-game deficit and win my division."

A Unique Scoring Formula

We'll admit, you're not going to be able to open the sports page the next day and determine whether or not you won your game yesterday.  That's a beauty of Fantasy Football that we can't quite copy.  But, with our scoring formula, it's more important for you to build your team like a real team in order to win - not just to look for the major Roto categories.

Does your team lack power?  You may have trouble scoring runs.  Do you have only one closer?  Your bullpen might not be enough help to pull out close games (we use 2 closers in the scoring formula).  Does your shortstop make a lot of errors?  Each error contributes to your opponent's offensive score, just like in real life.  Do you have several players dinged up?  You might have trouble filling a complete lineup each game.  Do you have a versatile utility infielder?  He may be able to fit into openings in your batting order and help you pull out a pennant.

No All-Star Teams

We're not saying don't try, but you're going to have to work really hard to put together a lineup of just star players.  First, you're competing against 15 other teams for the same players, while many Roto games put you in 10 or 12-team leagues.  In addition, you don't just draft a team - you need to pay each player a salary and you start off with a very tight salary cap.  In this game, guys like Eduardo Escobar, Brock Holt, or Steven Pearce can be valuable.

As you win games, you'll earn more cash.  You can cut or trade away high-priced players to get some cash back.  And you can sign minor league players for next to nothing in the hopes that in another year or two they'll contribute to your team.  Benchwarmer Baseball is a way of life.  You build your team for a pennant run, but you're also building your team for the future.  You get to keep the majority of your roster from year to year.  Can you build a dynasty, a one-year wonder, or will you be a consistent middle-of-the-pack team.  It's all in your hands!
